Gracie Jiu Jitsu was popularized after the first UFC event in 1993 after Royce Gracie used it to defeat much bigger opponents. The Gracie style of Jiu Jitsu (some refer to it as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) has its roots in Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Carlos Gracie learned Jiu Jitsu from Mitsuyo Maeda (a student of judo founder Jigoro Kano) when he emigrated to Brazil in the 1914 time frame.
Helio Gracie (Carlos' younger brother) became involved in the family business and modified some of the traditional techniques to work for him. He was smaller, and not very athletic. This was the genesis of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
Helio's son Royce Gracie has taught the family's style of Jiu Jitsu all around the world. We always look forward to his visits and seminars.
If I had to choose one word to describe this system I would choose "efficiency".
Helio Gracie quote:
"Jiu Jitsu is personal efficiency to protect the weaker, which anyone can do. It is the force of leverage against brute force."
If you are looking for exercise, flexibility, health, self defense, or just want to try something different, come try a class.
